Car Making a Noise? Suspension and Steering Problems Explained
Knocking, clunking, squeaking and pulling — suspension noises have distinct causes. Here is how to identify what you are hearing and what it will cost to fix in Sydney.
Suspension components absorb the constant punishment of Sydney's roads — speed humps, potholes, concrete joins, and kerbs. When they start failing, the noises are hard to ignore. Here is a plain-English guide to the most common suspension and steering faults and what they are likely to cost.
Knocking or Clunking Over Bumps
A knocking or clunking sound when going over speed humps, dips, or rough sections of road is one of the most common suspension complaints we hear across Greater Sydney. The most likely culprits, in order of frequency:
- Worn sway bar links — a small but critical component; rattles when worn; typically $150–250 per side
- Worn control arm bushings — rubber degrades with age and heat; clunks under acceleration or braking as well as bumps; $250–450 per arm
- Worn ball joints — a safety-critical item; loose ball joint = potential wheel separation; $280–500 per side
- Strut mount bearing — grinds or knocks when turning; $200–350 per side
- Shock absorber (damper) failure — usually a thud or bottoming-out feel rather than a knock
Squeaking Over Bumps
Squeaking (as opposed to knocking) usually points to rubber. Worn or dry rubber bushings squeak before they fully fail. Sway bar bushings are the most common cause — they can often be lubricated temporarily but replacement is the correct fix. Coil spring isolators (rubber pads between spring and seat) also squeak when they dry out.
Car Pulling to One Side
A car that consistently pulls left or right while driving straight is almost always a wheel alignment or tyre pressure issue — check pressures first, then book an alignment. However, if the pull is sudden, check for a flat tyre or seized brake caliper (you may also smell burning). A seized caliper is a safety issue requiring immediate attention.
Steering Wheel Off-Centre or Vibrating
A steering wheel that sits off-centre after driving straight roads usually indicates the wheels are out of alignment. A vibration felt through the steering wheel (especially at motorway speeds) is typically wheel balance — the most likely cause is a lost wheel weight. Both are common after hitting a significant pothole on Sydney roads.
When Is Suspension a Safety Issue?
Do not ignore these
Severe pull under braking, clunking that gets worse over time, a grinding or scraping noise from a wheel at speed, or any feeling of instability in the steering should be investigated the same day. Suspension failures can be catastrophic at highway speed.
Suspension Inspection and Repair — Mobile Service
Elite Auto Mechanical carries the common suspension consumables — sway bar links, bushings, ball joints, control arms — and can complete most repairs at your driveway. Wheel alignment requires fixed workshop equipment; we will tell you honestly when a job needs a hoist. Suspension checks from $100. We cover all of Greater Sydney — call 0413 868 624 or book online.
