Brakes Grinding or Squealing? A Sydney Driver's Guide

Brake noises are not all equal — some are normal, some are a warning, and some mean stop driving immediately. Here is how to tell the difference and what it will cost to fix.

Brake noises are the one thing drivers cannot afford to ignore. The good news: most brake noises have a clear cause and a clear fix. The bad news: some of them mean the car should not be driven further without inspection.

Squealing — Usually a Warning, Not an Emergency

A high-pitched squeal when braking is almost always the wear indicator — a small metal tab built into the pad that contacts the rotor when the pad is getting low. It is a deliberate signal. Book an inspection soon, but you do not need to stop driving immediately. If the squeal has been there for months and you have been ignoring it, the next sound you hear may be the grinding stage.

Grinding — Stop and Book Now

A metallic grinding when braking means the pad material is gone and the metal backing plate is contacting the rotor. This damages the rotor rapidly and compromises braking effectiveness. If you hear grinding, do not delay — a pad-and-rotor job costs more than just a pad replacement, but it costs far less than an accident.

Pulsing or Vibration Through the Pedal

A shuddering sensation through the brake pedal when slowing from highway speed typically indicates warped or unevenly worn rotors. Rotors can often be machined back to spec if caught early enough. If they are below minimum thickness, replacement is required.

What Does a Brake Service Cost in Sydney?

  • Front pads only: $100–$180 depending on vehicle
  • Front pads and rotors: $220–$380
  • Rear pads and rotors: $250–$420 (drum conversions add cost)
  • Full four-corner brake job: $500–$900 depending on make and parts

We always measure before quoting. If your pads have 4 mm remaining, we will tell you — and check them again at your next service rather than replacing unnecessarily. Showing you the measurement is standard practice for us.
